Creating Value Studies - a watercolor fundamentals workshop.
I'd like to invite you to join me in exploring light and dark values in my painting fundamentals workshop “Creating Value Studies."
As an artist, I understand the importance of creating meaningful connections with our viewers, and one of the key ways to achieve that is by planning our paintings carefully. In this workshop, we'll learn together how to use value studies as a roadmap, to guide the viewer's journey through our paintings.

Over the course of two 90-minute sessions, we'll focus on:
• Using value contrast to emphasize important elements
• Arranging lights and darks to lead the viewer's eye
• Deciding what to include, alter, or omit from our source photos
We'll experiment with creating thumbnail value studies that allow us to quickly try out different approaches and find the best foundation for our paintings.

In Session 1, we'll work with ArtGraf, a water-soluble graphite, and complete 5 value studies using this medium. In Session 2, we'll create 6 value studies using a 6B pencil and broadstroke drawing technique.

Workshop Videos: These are edited recordings of live online workshops. They contain all the course material from a full, 6 hour workshop including Q&A, but have been edited to remove 'dead space' where students were completing assignments. This way you can 'pause & play' and complete the workshop at your own pace.

This video is meant to be used as a live instructional tool where you can paint alongside Carl. We have opted for no musical background so that you can choose your favourite painting music to accompany Carl's instruction.
