Broadstroke Drawing Watercolor Workshop

I first came across Broadstroke drawing in a book titled “Pencil Pictures” by Ted Kautzky. I was so impressed by his drawings that I set out to learn how to do it myself. Broadstroke became a method for me of creating quick studies that didn’t resemble quick sketches but rather finished drawings. If you’re interested in learning how to produce quick, small drawings in your sketchbook that capture the essence of a subject and look polished and finished, then this workshop is for you.

Most of my broadstroke drawings are done in a format about 4 X 5 inches or slightly larger. They’re personal creations and often serve as preliminary works for paintings. To achieve the best results, I keep a minimum of materials.

I’ve noticed that a rough, sketchy-looking drawing doesn’t inspire me to expand it into a larger work, while a small drawing with a more polished appearance does, even though it took less time to produce. I believe you’ll find this technique to be very useful as you observe a subject and envision it as a painting.

Our workshop will consist of two 90-minute sessions. During session 1, we’ll practice various broadstroke techniques using three pre-drawn contour line subjects. In session 2, we’ll apply the techniques we learned to complete the contour line drawing and then apply them to the subject.
